大阪音楽大学（クラリネット専攻）卒業。クラリネットを中尾信二郎、大橋幸男、ルドルフ・イエッテルの各氏に師事。指揮は朝比奈隆氏の薫陶を受ける。1962年4月大阪市音楽団入団以来、同楽団コンサートマスター、バイス・コンダクターを経て、1985年4月に同楽団団長に就任。日本の数少ないプロの吹奏楽団の団長兼常任指揮者 として、日本の吹奏楽の発展に努めてきた。この間、1971年、ザルツブルクのモーツァルテウム音楽院国際セミナーに参加。
　吹奏楽オリジナル曲の本邦初演に力を注ぎ数多く行ってきた。また、管弦楽曲の吹奏楽編曲も手がけ数多く出版され、斯界の高い評価を受けている。尼崎市民芸術賞受賞。第39回大阪市市民表彰「文化功労部門」受賞。元大阪市音楽団団長、フィルハーモニック・ウインズ大阪名誉音楽監督、広島ウインドオーケストラ名誉音楽顧問。 
　2021年2月24日逝去。享年81歳。吹奏楽を熟知した数少ない日本人指揮者であり、現在も国内外の吹奏楽界に多大な影響を与え続けている。

A graduate of Osaka College of Music (majoring in Clarinet), Mr. Kimura studied under Shinjiro Nakao, Yukio Ohashi, and Rudolf Jettel. He received conductor’s training from the late Takashi Asahina. After joining the Osaka Municipal Symphonic Band in April 1962, he was appointed concert master and vice conductor of the group, and later in April 1985, assumed the post of symphony master.
 
As symphony master and conductor of one of the few professional concert bands in Japan, he has greatly contributed to the development of wind music in Japan. During this period, in 1971, he attended the international seminar of Mozarteum University of Music and Dramatic Arts in Salzburg, Austria. He was eager in promoting original concert band works from overseas and organized many Japan Premieres. Additionally, he published many arrangements of orchestral music for concert band and has earned high recognition from leading authorities in the field. He received the Amagasaki Art Award as well as the 39th Osaka Honorary Citizen Awards for “Cultural Contribution.”
 
Mr. Kimura, the Former Symphony Master of the Osaka Municipal Symphonic Band, the Honorary Music Adviser of the Hiroshima Wind Orchestra, and the Honorary Musical Director of the Osakan Philharmonic Winds, passed away at age of 81 on February 24, 2021. As one of the few Japanese conductors well versed in band music, his passion and thorough  knowledge are still having great influence upon the band world in Japan and worldwide. 

　
　兵庫県尼崎市出身。相愛大学音楽学部卒業。トランペットを椿弘、田中弘、ロバート・サリバンの各氏に師事。指揮法、音楽理論を木村𠮷宏、辻井清幸の両氏に師事。
 
　2018年1月にフィルハーモニック・ウインズ大阪（オオサカン）の正指揮者、2024年4月より常任指揮者に就任。同年3月の就任記念演奏会ではニューヨークフィル首席トロンボーン奏者のジョセフ・アレッシ氏と共演し、「絶対的な精密さと献身さを兼ね備えた素晴らしい演奏」と称される。2019年12月にアメリカ・シカゴで開催された第73回ミッドウエスト・クリニックのファイナルコンサートでオオサカンを指揮し、世界各国から集まる聴衆に3度の総スタンディングオベーションを受け称賛を浴びる。帰国後のインタビューが吹奏楽専門誌「バンドジャーナル」（音楽之友社）のSpotlightに取り上げられた。2020年3月にオオサカンと収録を行った「Viva Osakan!」がレコード芸術誌の準特選盤・優秀録音に、stereo誌では優秀録音盤に選出された。
 
　オオサカンの指揮者として多数の公演やレコーディングを指揮する他、数々の客演指揮者のアシスタントも務めている。その他、九州管楽合奏団等の客演指揮も行った。指揮だけでなくトークを交えた公演はどれも好評を博している。様々なジャンル（ダンス・歌・合唱・講談・影絵等）と吹奏楽のコラボレーションも積極的に行っている。また、吹奏楽コンクールなどの各審査員、スクールバンドや社会人バンドの指導にも定評があり、国内のみならず海外でもバンド指導のアドバイザーとして活躍している。
 

Tomo Matsuo is Resident Conductor of the Osakan Philharmonic Winds since January 2018, after serving as Assistant Conductor for Mr. Yoshihiro Kimura for years.
Of Matsuo’s inaugural concert, the New York Philharmonic Principal Trombonist Joseph Alessi said, “This is a fantastic ensemble. They played with absolute precision and dedication and they sounded wonderful. Congratulations to Tomo on his conducting debut.” 
In December 2019, Matsuo conducted the OSAKAN and received standing ovation for an outstanding performance at the finale concert of the 73rd Midwest Clinic. After the big success, Matsuo was interviewed for a cover story in Band Journal, a major concert band magazine. “Viva Osakan!,” the recording he made with the band in March 2020 received awards and rave reviews by prominent Japanese musical magazines such as The Record Geijutsu and stereo. 
In addition to conducting the OSAKAN at numerous concerts and recordings, Matsuo is an active conductor and clinician. He has recently conducted Kyushu Wind Orchestra. His fun and knowledgeable talk during concert always gets favorable reputations. As a clinician, Matsuo has given clinics to many school bands and community bands both in Japan and internationally.
Matsuo graduated from the Soai University majoring in trumpet performance. He studied trumpet under Hiroshi Tsubaki, Hiromu Tanaka and Robert Sullivan, and conducting and music theory under Yoshihiro Kimura and Kiyoyuki Tsujii.
